Harness Personal Development through Bioenergetics – By Donna Himel

Founded by Alexander Lowen M.D, Bioenergetics has been an amazing discovery for me and Marvin in our continued spiritual growth and self-improvement path.  We were referred to Robert Glazer PhD, and have been working with him for about a year.  Dr. Glazer studied intensively with Alexander Lowen for many years and now continues his practice in Gainesville, Florida.

Bioenergetics combines work with the body and the mind to help people resolve their emotional problems and discover their potential for pleasure and joy in living.  What you think affects how you feel and vice versa.  Bioenergetics seeks to bring about the healthy integrations of the body and the mind so that you have the energy to discover pleasure.  The body work of bioenergetics involves special exercises that are designed to help you get in touch with your tensions and release them through appropriate movement.  The techniques focus on releasing the physical tensions while dealing with the psychological issues underlying them.

When we experience stressful or traumatic events, the body records and stores this information with great accuracy. Each trauma leaves its mark, etched into both our psyche and our physical makeup. The chronic muscle tension patterns we accumulate affect how well we function, preventing us from accessing our most alive state.

We have learned so much about ourselves through this amazing practice.  Unlike traditional psychotherapy, it is about working things out in your body, not analyzing your past while lying on a sofa.  Your body structure tells the story about your past and your personality.  We can tell Bob about anyone we work with or know and describe them physically.  From that, he can tell us all about this person even though he’s never met them.  He does this based on their body structure.

Some of the important discoveries we have made through bioenergetics is the importance of breath because we all tend to practice shallow breathing when stressed.  We don’t get enough deep breaths into our lower which causes an upper/lower body split.  We also tend to have a lot of pent up emotions in our life, emotions which we haven’t been able to express and in a bioenergetics session you are allowed to release those emotions through body work.

I look forward to continuing to discover more and more about myself through this exciting and therapeutic work.
